RAINS (Resource Aware Intelligent Network Services) Project

The goals of the RAINS project are to develop technologies that enable the integration of domain specific compute and storage resources with the dynamic networking and Intelligent Network Services (INS) environment. We define a Multi-Resource Service Plane (MRSP) which will allow resource owners/managers to locate and place themselves from a topology and service availability perspective within the dynamic network infrastructure. MRSP will enable the presentation of integrated topology views and computation results which can include resources across the spectrum of compute, storage, and networks. Through development of the MRSP, and a clear definition of how resource owners can integrate their resources into this service plane, the organic and ad hoc placement of resources into this ecosystem is expected.

The RAINS project is a collaboration amongst the following institutions and organizations:

  • University of Maryland / Mid-Atlantic Crossroads
  • Argonne National Laboratory

We are extremely grateful to the Department of Energy for supporting this project.
